What to do if your switchboard has issues after hours (Toowoomba Homeowners)

DO NOT TOUCH!

If you see or hear anything unusual like sizzling, buzzing, sparking, or a burning smell coming from your switchboard, do not touch it or any connected appliances. This is a clear sign of a serious fault that could lead to electric shock or fire.

Turn Off the Main Switch (ONLY if safe to do so): If there are no signs of fire, smoke, or immediate danger, and you can safely access your main switch (usually clearly labelled on your switchboard), turn it OFF. This will cut power to your entire property. If in doubt, or if it feels unsafe, do NOT attempt this.

Check for an Area-Wide Outage: Before assuming it's your switchboard, check if your neighbours have power. If the whole street or area is out, it's likely a network issue (e.g., Ergon Energy), not your internal switchboard. You can often check your energy provider's outage map online.

DO NOT Attempt DIY Repairs: Under Australian standards (AS/NZS 3000:2018), any electrical work, particularly on switchboards, must be carried out by a licensed electrician. Attempting to fix it yourself is not only highly dangerous (risk of electric shock, fire, serious injury, or death) but also illegal and will void your insurance.
